• Karim'HOC, raid policy forestry in 2 days

http://www.karrimhoc.be/

Saturday 06 and Sunday, February 7, 2010

recent years I hear about this "Karim'HOC" this time it is here I am hard at work , south of Couvin, straddling the French border. Or rather, we, because it is a race in teams of 2, and I found my happy accomplice oriented Isabelle.

Our goal is clear: 1. do not get hurt (in reference to the fortunes of Isa in 2009 ...); 2. do not get carried away, well positioned and still learn, 3. to rank "honorable."

Saturday.
We meet several of our teams "Baba Club, and even our president Iwan package this weekend, but came to cheer us on. Nice! The competition will be fierce!

The weather is slightly overcast and the temperature a few degrees positive.

At first glance at the map, the areas do not seem too difficult, nevertheless a lot of elevation with certain passages. Where will they send us? Mystery. The mass start
official site 1.5 km from the room "Secretariat" France side, in the "state forest". We go there relax, 10 minutes earlier, and here we are .... lost from the first hub! It starts well, can not find the path to ... start! It's finally on the advice of a motor driver (thank you Iwan ...), then a bicycle, we find that famous line with at least 5 minutes late. Some end already tracking tags, or are already soaring on the course! Whatever, not panic, the day is long.

For the uninitiated, it provides us when we arrived to the secretariat, a color map of all blank tags and scorecards. Just after the official start, we are given a card on which black and white tags are positioned, and the name of the position (accuracy further details of the land). To us to see the tags on our color map (without mistakes!) Or run with the map B & W (less convenient and much less readable, reserved for "pros")

And we're off for 19 positions in points in the order, within the time limit 06h. " Keeping the feet dry at least during the first quarter of an hour " I said Isa. This is hardly a small 1/4h, because from the outset, we are led to take a path full of water. And if, on the map, nothing attracted our attention to the "special" wet ground, we should have been suspicious of the title area "Le Grand Marais"! Area of some square kilometers of water per sip the recent snowmelt and rainfall of previous days to sink to the knee and wade through the remnants of snow-cold water. One very slow, which makes us gallery between positions 2 and 3. We are at first it promises! Then, the ground is improving, "a little", the highways are still snowy and slippery. The following tags on land much less humid, shall be found without too much difficulty, except that some distances are relatively long and many "forbidden zones" (shaded in red) make us do a lot of detours.
At the "11", we cross the creek 3 times (which marks the border) on a small makeshift bridge very slippery for anything pointing to the tag, and re-crossed this time but straight ahead, exit the bridge!
The "14" is wasting time, we were certain to be the right place, and it was stashed in a small fir next door. We issue a doubt as to its good location ... The latter are more closely spaced, fortunately, because I suffer from a lack of regime at the end. Finally we reach the goal after 4:45 'running.

The arrival is in a very nice holiday village, nestled in the woods, with small isolated cottages, cozy and well equipped. Hot tea, a bath, a little relaxation, debriefing; refuel (food and drink (s) ... who said Chimay ???), a good night's sleep and we are retyped for another day of tumbling.

Sunday.
Mist, fortunately not too thick, covers the region.
Mass start at 09:30 except competitors ranked in the half-hour early. Those soar from 3 in 3 min. Score
, quick look: we will finish with the Grand Marais "!
Top 5 are found without difficulty, we miss the 6 without seeing it, repositioning, turning, pointing, phew! Unfortunately, folding my card, I lose the copy B & W with the names and number of posts. Too bad, no question of re-turn, we will do without.
then crossing the border. I mess by getting the "10". Lengthen the distances between beacons and, at times, we have the impression of being on a trail.
down towards the "12" on a good path, with all my new fall along in a big mud puddle! I'm not missed, unrecognizable, soaked. Isa laughs. No pains. I jump in the little creek that runs to clean myself a bit (especially the card, which fortunately is plastic!). And it's the attack of the post "13" on top of a rocky point that we made up for some climbing. Back on our feet, several km run, climb, and ... approach of Grand Marais. For the "15", we saw yesterday, and know that it is already planted in this area "wet." It's starting again where I take my ... 3 e fall! There are days like this ... " This time, y 'fed up, lift your feet, God " I am reprochère inside! Again
long distance to the swamp "16". Long, wet and inmprécis to "17", giving us a hard time, even stashed in an old quarry surrounded by fire all similar. Only 2 posts, barbed wire passage, and here we are.

Fortunately, the loss of our card "benchmarks" we were not too disturbed.
05h26min to enjoy happiness with welcome tea and hot chocolate.

No showers, locker room a little chilly, a good beer with the team (which has yet said Chimay?), A skewer to the road and return home.

Review: Are you satisfied with our performance, galleys limited, longer than a lot of technical areas, it was still very physical with this immense swamp. We recovered three spots in the standings. It should not only go the distance, but ALL point and back in order and on time. Our complementary us again allowed to complete it all!

Very good weekend, and we're already thinking that will take us to the next in the heat of the Moroccan desert, another adventure!

Trail Night (starting at 18h), 24 km, no of supplies.

harsh winter this year! It almost did not go, then the weather situation has improved, then degraded in the morning even in this region. After dithering, we finally, Thierry, Jean-Paul and I, by taking the road and join with infinite precautions, after crossing our "high Ardennes" (de Fraiture rising to 674 m), this region Soiron in the valley of the Weser. A layer of snow ahead of us not too thick, but this much ice. We arrived around 17h.

We find our friend Fred, CCC finisher, Alain (UTMB), Marie-Anne (CCC) and many other familiar faces, including some Wouter Hamelinck, several other finishers CCC UTMB and even PTL! Beautiful people, whatever!

Some warm-up strides, adjustment of frontal (ventral ...), and ready for departure. It is just a few degrees below 0.
Thierry, Jean-Paul and Fred

18h: " we are still waiting for ten minutes until it gets dark " We will launch the organizer " Heavenly Riders!

And here we go for 21 km (announced, but in reality it will be 24) discoveries in the shadows of a moonlit intermittent. The first km linked together nicely, crossing villages, narrow passage between hedges (we took the opportunity to chat and do one or the other picture ...)

Beautiful passages, sometimes on roads, sometimes in the woods excluding roads, stream crossings, muddy tracks, it goes up and down constantly.

The pace is quite high, should look carefully where you walk, do not miss the signs, do not run too close to the one before. For this reason, several times, before I take the small groups, just to better position my little toes, and better identify where I'm going to ask!

The first two thirds of the race passed without too much difficulty, elevation changes, both uphill and downhill, not long or very demanding. I even came to wonder why this race had the reputation of "hard"?
I quickly understood my question and stored into oblivion when I approached the final third, much more hilly, and especially about 5 km from the finish, turn right at the corner of a house The wall! The rise, nay climb the hillside, continuous, steep, slippery and endless, putting a strain on the thighs! No doubt, it breaks the rhythm and it makes the damage. The recovery at the top is much slower, it blows and it does not discuss more! We must get back into the race because it's not over. Some "break-legs" are still to pass before entrendre off the voice of the announcer at the finish. But we are not there yet, it goes, it goes down again, it glides over again.
And one ends with a superb descent into a large field covered with a ten cm of snow, a real ski slope, I very much fun! Still a few hundred meters away and saw the village, the sounds come together and bingo, it's arrival!

RESULT: 87 e / 353 - 2:40:05 - 4 th V2

4 minutes behind Fred and 3 to Thierry, I am very happy with my time, well managed I think I have given good. Only a few warning cramps after the passage of the "neck" came from (barely) affect my run a few hundred meters, time to evacuate.

No showers because the water supply froze (!!), a good spaghetti (I ate a whole beef!) And good special beer (The Celeste), and we are cocked and ready for the 120 km return.
It was well worth the detour! A remake!

Publix Roast Beef Sub

Three days in nature.

DSC05437 After spending two weeks in Chiang May in the city, we had a strong desire to get down to green. We let ourselves be drawn to a small village in the sweet name Umphang, near Myanmar border. Four years ago, we hesitated, but the children remained small for several days hiking ... All things come to those who wait!

DSC05375

We never imagined anything specific and we were incredibly surprised by the beauty of nature. We started rafting. From the first courses we were amazed. Soon, tiny waterfalls gave us rainbows. It Always a good show! The calcareous concretions formed fine. Sometimes a cliff overlooking us, sometimes we go in a straight. Passing through a narrow passage due to dense vegetation or from under a fallen tree there at the last rainy season, the diversity of the landscape was beautiful. Some were quick to remind us that it was not just a ride but also a technical sport. Thibault rowed by following the movements of Kai. We were surprised to get a river so wild! Kingfishers, herons, magpies and many others spent before we are hiding ... P1180923 P1180925 P1190095 P1190106 P1190077

After wearing it for five hours left, we followed a steep path into the forest. Progressing between beautiful big trees and huge clumps of bamboo, we're lulled by many birds. Kai, our Burmese guide (illegal!) Grew in the forest. He taught us a lot about the fauna and flora. We were good all five! Arriving at the entrance to the park to camp on a Saturday was tiring. We were the only ones! P1190189 P1190202 P1190216 P1190220 Tomorrow is a forest greener than we found. The shades of very dark to light created wonderful lights with the sun penetrated here and there ... Looking at the trees, a snake coiled around a sapling that we saw. We were able to leisure the detail with binoculars. The red-headed woodpecker has suffered the same fate ... The excitement was at its height the face of all these meetings. But what about the Tee Lo Su waterfall? Majestic, this is not an exaggeration! No, no, I assure you!

DSC05289 DSC05299 DSC05336 P1190250 the afternoon, we again walked three or four hours along a river and across many other bridges on or over less precarious. Sometimes, the children had the feeling of being explorers. But the greatest gift we have Kai and Nam has probably been making musical instruments from bamboo. We have issued similar sound of the trumpet or the flute. We improvised a concert. The orchestra was rich with all the sounds of Mother Kind as the friction of bamboos, crackle of leaves underfoot, the whisper of those who fell and the singing of birds. One of them caught my attention with its wobbly ... We were thrilled. The pleasure of feeling alone is a luxury exhilarating! ... The reflection of an elephant in the water announced the approach of a Karen village. This is where we spent our second night. P1190222 P1190282 P1190291 DSC05392 DSC05446 DSC05450 DSC05462 DSC05468 DSC05476

In this dry season, rice is harvested. Villagers distilled rice wine at dawn ... The atmosphere is peaceful. Their four elephants they can carry heavy loads over difficult roads and occasional tourists like us! So we spent our last day on the back of an elephant. The children were given the chance to play ... mahout was a fabulous adventure! DSC05499 DSC05541 DSC05531 DSC05539 DSC05551 P1190353 DSC05602 DSC05633 DSC05652 P1190405
