Lollipops Large Toronto

"Alone in the Dark" by Paul Auster

It was a moment that I had read a book by P aul Auster, then it is with some pleasure that I immersed myself in this book that I quickly devoured.

+ + + The back cover + + +

"Alone in the dark, I turn and turn the world into my head while trying to overcome an insomnia , one more, one more sleepless night in the Great American Desert. " Thus begins the story of August Brill, retired literary critic, who, forced into immobility by a car accident, settled in Vermont, with her daughter Miriam, which fails to heal the wound that it has already imposed a divorce yet five years old, and who comes to collect his own daughter, Katya, devastated by the death in Iraq, in atrocious conditions, a young man with whom she had broken, thus precipitating, she believes, the latter's departure for Baghdad ... To escape the concerns of the present and the weight of memories, inglorious, in which assail the house of lost souls, Brill takes refuge in fictions of different sorts which he adorns countless sleepless nights. That night, he staged a parallel world where Sept. 11 would not have occurred and where America is not at war against Iraq but in the throes of a bitter civil war. However, while the night progresses, imagination and reality gradually come to overlap as to read and tell each other, to question the responsibility of the individual vis-à-vis its own existence as vis-à-vis history . By placing this war to cause a disturbance capable of inventing the "catastrophe" of a fiction which abolishes the laws of causality, Paul Auster establishes in this powerful allegory, a link between the disarray of consciousness contemporary American and the tireless and fruitful inquiry that continues on the path that the strangeness to happen, the novel invention.

+ + + + + + My opinion

It is with pleasure that I went back and drowned in the writing of Paul Auster . And with even more interest that this book was a book that attracted me well when it debuted in 2009 Actes Sud and enjoyed a beautiful cover of a beautiful red flash. A title that should be released in paperback in the collection of Babel same publisher. Finally, it will be soon I think.

strange adventure book crossed. Dreamlike tale of a side that tells us the story of an America in Brick uchronic (the word is out! see this post for a definition) that September 11 never happened and where the U.S. is not at war against Iraq but against itself. A civil war broke out because of the taking of independence of a part of this cluster of states known as rude American. Brick and one day finds himself in a hole, he also knows how he got there. But hardly has there be helped out of this place, be entrusted with the mission to kill a character: a guy somewhere dream everything is happening and that it would stop is eliminated probably all this strange and unjust war.

In parallel, following August Brill, retired literary critic and stuck in bed because of a leg useless. He lives with his daughter, who is trying to digest his divorce, and her granddaughter, who is trying to digest the murder of her ex-boyfriend, and her rehashing his past, the love of his life and many other things . And during this strange night, this dark and insomniac, Brill will dream of adventure and character of Brick. He will rethink his own life, questioning, rethinking his family, talk with her granddaughter, and more.

Once again, I got carried away by the pen, deceptively simple, Paul Auster . This American author comes to creating characters always engaging with that little something extraordinary that makes you want to know everything. Its alternate history dream slid in the history of this family, Paul Auster offers a fiction in the fiction that is not free by explaining the delusions of literary Philip K. Dick . It offers us an atmosphere that is not without either his book reminds "In the scriptorium" . But still, even though I read the book quickly and with pleasure, enjoying his writing with a happiness found, it will remain perhaps not his best novel. However, if the book released in paperback in Babel, feel still not (re) discover Paul Auster .

"The controller of Nuremberg" by Thomas Day

A little book at the lowest price. The opportunity to rediscover Thomas Day who had left me with a small memory "The Way of the Sword" while its new in the anthology "Back on the horizon" fooled me well ( chronic here). A very nice text that "The automatic Nuremberg .

+ + + The back cover + + +

"Am I a soul, Father? "That is the question that Melchior Hauser, the famous automaton chess player, wants to ask his creator, Victor Hauser. The Russian court in the Jewish quarter of Nuremberg, the London fog to the heats of Africa, he moved to search of its origins, but the search could it surprises ... Against the backdrop of the Napoleonic campaigns, an initiatory journey to cross genres to enter the world of Thomas Day.

+ + + + + + My opinion

the price of 2 euros a book, it does not hesitate long. And as stated here earlier, in his new anthology "Back on the horizon" fooled me good. So, this small format gave me the opportunity to rediscover the French author. For the next time maybe it will be a longer distance here because the story like in 120 pages. A format that is commonly referred to new, especially that this text in its first version appeared in the Bifrost No. 42 in 2006, while for the same number of pages others are novel. It's your choice, it is certain that he holds in one book.
Thomas Day offers us a nice little alternate history, a first draft which allows me to engage Winter Time Challenge. But if we are in a alternate history is that there 's been a moment when everything changes relative to history as we know. We're in an alternate history to our own, and the point of divergence this is the beginning of the 19th century. In this context it Napoleon had not lost at Waterloo and he even managed to invade Russia.

It is in this period is around 1830 and around. Melchior Hauser is an automaton, a gifted chess player of course, but provided with intelligence. Even a soul? In any case of a consciousness of itself. Still, he wants to meet his father, his creator, because he wants to know more about our origins automaton with a conscience. And the way he will continue to recognize, as well as the importance in business, while continuing to question himself while observing the world.

Besides this automaton we follow Balthazar Hauser, a pure spirit. Finally pure, not because of materiality, but conscious level, it is more of a vengeful killer than anything else running his desire of poetic justice here and there to kill his brother Kaspar Hauser, the orphan Europe (an article about it on Wikipedia ).

We will follow these two entities, one mechanical, the other ethereal, until their final encounter. Along the way there would be questions that remain unanswered, which is not so bad, and we observe the world through two other ways to perceive things.

A short novel, then, is a stretched version of the story published in Bifrost. A very nice text, which tends to prove that Thomas Day is a good novelist. A book I recommend to all curious that the author is none other than the pseudonym of Gilles Dumay , the collection manager Moons Ink Denoël editions.

How Much Is A Small Cabins

"Sansalina" by Nicolas Jaillet

It's still fun to read a thriller from time to time. Admittedly, this is not what is most on this blog but with a little luck, we found more in 2011. In any case, reading "Sansalina" was a very pleasant reading.

+ + + The back cover + + +

Pablo Zorfi goes wrong. His only daily killings, kidnappings and betrayals. Mexico in the 20s, brothels run at the bottom, away from dust and Pancho Villa mustache. The street child Sansalina is now the master of the city. But he became ill as a rattlesnake. His best friends terrorize. He has only one solution to convince himself that he still has a future: Dolores review. Touching her skin. The young woman breathes freedom. Nobody tells him what to do. She forgot Sansalina, his violence and his men. Dolores also had a childhood dream, for which she has sacrificed everything. She founded a library. The day that dream explodes like a vulgar matchbox, another battle begins.

+ + + + + + My opinion

This is perhaps not the best thriller I read in my life, but like any book of its kind, it reads quickly and well. It embarks easily, and neither saw nor knew we're in another country, Mexico, and another time, years 20. So successful challenge to this book, because we left very quickly carried away by the whirlwind black.

Adventures of Mexican thugs forces, we imagine them with beautiful mustache and a blazing sun above his head. All with an air of tough and looks of gunmen. Well enough to dive into another world that the U.S. thriller. This is not to offend, because it leaves the scope of a film noir atmosphere of the kind just suggest. Found almost a western of the coup with music by Sergio Leone in the background, of course, all the ingredients are there: the Mexican gangsters, small towns and dry sunny delivered into the hands of the gangsters of the era and corner, at the prostitutes tempered character, etc.. It is violent, but not so much by the acts, murders finally being rare, as the mood that permeates this book. It's dark, hopeless and dead ends! One quickly realizes that this will not end in happy endings, but is this really what we expect from this kind of book? Of course not!

style Nicolas Jaillet is quite sharp, with a short and punchy phrasing, does ant not lose unnecessary circumlocutions. Yet he manages to give us a more credible atmosphere of black, alternating throughout the book between past and present, and traveling between the youth of these gangsters and their lives and decay present a unique decor: the beginning of Mexico the 20th century.

Finally a nice book, maybe not revolutionary but which benefits from an original setting and treatment of the story well found. A book that will give you the distraction of the scenery, and some dark days for a late night. All that we can expect anything from a thriller!

First, my neighbor, Bernard without this little "challenge", who knows if I would one day started running? Florence and without his insistence, I would probably never come to CALGA. Then Martine , without which no training would perhaps have not been as beneficial. Then David, without whom I would perhaps never been to the mountain. Finally Isabella, for his enthusiasm for the discovery of distant horizons and took me in his luggage.

Epilogue : This world of running has opened a new life. I discovered "another world", friendliness, wellness and camaraderie. It also allowed me to experience, first in my area, and many other places in an original way and allowing time to appreciate things. Besides the invaluable contribution in health (staying within reasonable standards, obviously) and mentally. A
in a few years, I hope for the future ....

Getting Marriedmemorial Candle

"The Mythago Wood" by Robert Holdstock

is through a common reading initiated on the forum Livraddict I released this book my Read Cell. Happy discovery that it was because Holdstock is really a great writer who possessed a beautiful pen we discover a shared fantasy literature, fantasy and science fiction. A real pleasure! And I think a great writer!

+ + + The back cover + + +

In a remote corner of Herefordshire stretches of Ryhope Wood, a remnant of an ancient forest back to the last glaciation, a wood so dense that it seems impossible to penetrate in- Beyond a certain limit. George Huxley, who settled with his family at the edge of Ryhope, for obscure reasons, is obsessed with the forest, the idea to explore its depths, an obsession that leads him to neglect his wife and her children. After his death in 1946, his two son find themselves Ryhope where, thanks to books he has left, the strange truth they are gradually revealed: in this corner of old England, it seems that the human psyche is capable of giving life to the peoples of the myths and legends. And at the bend of a trail or behind a tree, hide Guiwenneth, the beautiful Celtic princess, Jason and his Argonauts, King Arthur Pendragon and many other heroes still ...

+ + + + + + My opinion

frankly is with pleasure that I discovered Robert Holdstock . It is true that this book and its sequels, are almost part of the present conventional gender SFFF (brief, the worlds What imagination!) in any case it is part of "The ideal library of the imagination" of Cockroach Cosmic . Now I understand better why we take this book in such high esteem because he is truly magnificent. And I also understand why it does not appeal to many people because " The Mythago Wood" is not the last book of classic fantasy and formatted. Robert Holdstock gives us here a book to cross genres of fantasy, in that I almost joined Brian Aldiss in his preface where he says "The Mythago Wood is neither wonderful nor the fantasy or science fiction, but one kind alone .

Paper unconventional end very badly described by its back cover, but it is clear that it is not clear summary of a book so rich, I should. "The Mythago Wood" debut as a book of SF. Steven Huxley decided to return to his home in the family home. The father is dead, this dark character with whom the family did not know how to react to his delusions and other disappearances in the woods. Rest Christian, his brother, he has not seen for years. But now just returned unspeakable tension arises between them. Christian over time began to resemble the father, and because he followed the same path as this whimsical: study and explore this strange forest of what the Ryhope. Through his brother, Steven will learn more about the wood, until Christian disappears or rather fled to the forest. And time goes by ...

One day, Steven discovers a man and a dog at home. He does not speak the same language as him. This character is strange, as from another time ... And then later she is a woman who shows up at him. A woman who looks suspiciously like Guiwenneth this woman that his father knew, this woman that her brother loved this woman who is dead and buried in their garden. But yet she is alive and well right out of the woods with strange powers. This forest is almost a living, this place gives rise to the Scots mythagos, characters from the human unconscious, myths of all ages come true!

But one day, Christian and embark forcibly returned Guiwenneth. Left for dead, Steven survive as Christian Urscumug that famous, big-headed character boar. Steven took a great love for his Guiwenneth the Mythago from its spirit, will leave in the forest ... But I say no more.

If the book begins on a pile of childhood memories and family stories, is best left to weigh a mood, at times heavy, at times happy. The relational net is woven, and on that basis everything is built. Gradually, with the discovery of what are mythagos, is created an atmosphere close to science fiction. We are told what they are, how they appeared, etc.. Then drag on a sense of fantasy, by impressions left here or there, or special environments created by Holdstock. Fantasy, or wonderful, invites himself also once the characters from the past, legends, myth comes in. In short, all kinds of imaginary are there in one book, and only happiness. Really!

To complete the set, Robert Holdstock is gifted with a beautiful pen. Describes very well what is going on without falling for my taste, in an acute descriptionite. It develops wish Steven and his moods, and brilliantly describes the growing phenomenon Mythago. Entering a slow pace that lets many go into the special ambience of this book. And yet these same points, which are qualities for me are faults in others. Train may be too long to describe or explain things, missing Perhaps some rhythm and action focus on poetry and myth taking shape, Holstock alienates an audience there. But it would go next in my opinion an excellent book!

short, a wonderful book that conveys a certain beauty. The nature there is an enormous place, personified by the forest and Urscumug. A forest that you feel familiar with Robert Holdstock as sweat here and there naturalist information. A book to read and does not steal his title "Masterpiece of SFFF" .

MY DIARY 2011

My goal 2011: UTMB, the grand tour this time. After my "shelved" during the draw of 2010, I retain priority registration for this year. I will not miss this opportunity! Hoping that the weather will be milder than in 2010 ...!
In preparation: a large trail for months.

This will be my 11 th season running (and all sport short!) In CALGA *, challenge where I become less diligent in the nature of things (we do not know ... Just be everywhere 9 races in 2010).

* For the uninitiated, the CALGA ( http://www.acdampicourt.be/calg.htm #) is the Challenge of Free Gait Gaume, which incorporates 42 Official racing from late January to late October. Every Sunday at 10am in a different village of our beautiful region, are between 400 and 700 joggers of all ages gather for a "free style" because everyone is free to make his race as he wants. 2 distances are offered: small, about 5 km, and high, approx 10 km, with 3 seedlings on the season. Mainly on farm roads and forest with undulating hills and varied. Must participate in 15 races to be included in the final standings and get the t-shirt. This year, no fewer than 33 additional races which are held off the challenge, the remaining Sundays outside the period, and Friday evening during the period. Enough to occupy every Sunday of the year!
Note: October 9, 2011 , this will be my run in collaboration with the Table Tennis Virton, 11 th edition, 3 th year in the challenge. Welcome! (534 runners in 2010)

January 22: Soironnaises Trail of the Fireflies, Soiron (B). Night Trail 21 km

LISBON

42.195 km
December 5, 2010

And now, the 2010 season draws to an end. Me a few mates rather forced the hand so that I accompanied to Lisbon, where the excuse was there for a marathon around the city. Why not? But out of question to look at running, so I registered, unpretentious statement. Just for fun!

Thus a small team of merry men (14 specifically) are found at Luxembourg airport Friday, December 3. More motivated than each other (yeah sure ...!), only two were doing their first marathon, the others being "vetted." In my case, it must be on 16 th , if my calculations are correct. With
2h delay that we land safely in Lisbon (a strike by English air traffic controllers forced our plane to get around Spain). Hotel management, already late in the evening and small restaurant .... discovering the nightlife district (that's it ... it starts!).

Saturday 04 . Raise rather dreary, time is not great, it is rather cold and windy (5 to 8 ° C).
's not hot, eh?

Bib pick at the Estadio 1 ° de Maio , small stadium that pays not mine.
This is my record (hm, hm ...)

We realize that this is not a "big" marathon, the expo is reduced to an absolute minimum, the facilities are not grand, the atmosphere is relatively flat. Well, never mind, we will not complain, we have chosen.
city tour, we discover the old railway and the tram line 28. Hard Rock Cafe, Castelo de Sao Jorge, old neighborhoods ... And a few drinks to warm us.
is not flat, Lisbon !

the evening, we are entitled to holiday lights year-end, it's worth a look. Little restaurant in the evening. And a glass (not reasonable, that ...) before going to bed (ah, anyway ...).

Sunday 05. Up at 06:30. To our surprise (and satisfaction), the weather is very mild (around 15 ° C), and it rained last night. But the wind is strong enough. Subway to get to the departure, deposit the bag after the race, setting conditions and souvenir photo. He did ... 18 ° C great for running. We are 10 on the marathon (1200 starters), 2 on semi (1000 starters).
09h. Go! I take a fairly relaxed pace, I do not intend to force. We remain relatively grouped for the first 5 km. Until mid-race, the course is quite hilly, false flat to slight amounts succeeding runs. The urban landscape is nothing really attractive, the successor to long boulevards lanes, crossings with one or the other place quite pretty. We are rapidly reaching the halfway by pedestrian streets overlooking the Praça do Comércio at the foot of the Tagus. ensued a long journey of 14 km (round trip of 2 X 7 km) along the river, without ever seeing it. Long avenue of the railway and other warehouses, it seems endless. Ah, the old tower (actually, the "famous" Tower of Belem, I teach later ...). We encounter those who are ahead of us across the white line. I exchange ideas to try to see my "colleagues" competitors, because I think well be the last of our group. I see almost everyone with relatively small differences, just before reaching the "reverse loop" that returns me too in the other direction. I have them in sight, but steadily lost ground slightly. Too bad, I do not even try to reassemble. The wind is quite strong and very changeable, with gusts that make us deviate from our path, signs that snapped, mileage indications that lie in As ...
30 km e , I want to refuel myself, because it is almost the first stop where we find some solid. I went back nicely with friend Guy in sight, who seems distressed. I agree and notes its lack of punch. Cravings due to lack of food to ravitos. He decides to go on, alternating walking and running. I decided to accompany him. We thus end up
, trotting gently until the 35th. Then comes the rise in the city, from the other side of the Praça do Comércio . Endless long climbs interspersed with crossroads where the local police regulate traffic between groups of runners.
40 e , our trip comes to an end, a photo stop, and it clings to the final.
This time it is, enter the "stage" under the clapper .... Oh, well, no, actually there are not many people, apart from the other riders ...!
Replacing the chip against the medal ... (ah, anyway!).
We are reforming our group and taste a good .... coca (no, not beer!) Well deserved.

result 04h 13 '11 . 694 e / 1107

Return by subway, we barely reach before a rainstorm does s'abbattent the city. The remaining competitors have not been fun at all! And the rest of the day This will, turning streets into rivers and staircases and waterfalls. Forcing us to shelter ... in bars, restaurants and other covered terraces (duh ...!!).
From the water, what are you here ...

This marathon will not let me an unforgettable, journey relatively difficult and monotonous.
But the mood of the group is, as usual, very good and rather festive, late into the evening. It smells really the end of the season ....!

Monday 06. The weather is rather nice, we continue the tour of the city. Old town, typical restaurant, bar one (the Pavilion of China, unique in the world, not to miss!), Shopping, Santa Justa Elevator (1902), botanical garden, an extension ... And in the evening Quatier student, just behind our hotel, where the beer flows freely. It smells really the end of the season ....
China Pavilion

Elevador de Santa Justa

And from above, it makes it ...

Botanical Garden

The return Tuesday, brings us back to our sad reality, from the sun and 18 ° to the gray with snow ... and a few degrees below zero.
Lisbon, where are you?? I miss you already ...
From Lisbon ....
