"The controller of Nuremberg" by Thomas Day

A little book at the lowest price. The opportunity to rediscover Thomas Day who had left me with a small memory "The Way of the Sword" while its new in the anthology "Back on the horizon" fooled me well ( chronic here). A very nice text that "The automatic Nuremberg .

+ + + The back cover + + +

"Am I a soul, Father? "That is the question that Melchior Hauser, the famous automaton chess player, wants to ask his creator, Victor Hauser. The Russian court in the Jewish quarter of Nuremberg, the London fog to the heats of Africa, he moved to search of its origins, but the search could it surprises ... Against the backdrop of the Napoleonic campaigns, an initiatory journey to cross genres to enter the world of Thomas Day.

+ + + + + + My opinion

the price of 2 euros a book, it does not hesitate long. And as stated here earlier, in his new anthology "Back on the horizon" fooled me good. So, this small format gave me the opportunity to rediscover the French author. For the next time maybe it will be a longer distance here because the story like in 120 pages. A format that is commonly referred to new, especially that this text in its first version appeared in the Bifrost No. 42 in 2006, while for the same number of pages others are novel. It's your choice, it is certain that he holds in one book.
Thomas Day offers us a nice little alternate history, a first draft which allows me to engage Winter Time Challenge. But if we are in a alternate history is that there 's been a moment when everything changes relative to history as we know. We're in an alternate history to our own, and the point of divergence this is the beginning of the 19th century. In this context it Napoleon had not lost at Waterloo and he even managed to invade Russia.

It is in this period is around 1830 and around. Melchior Hauser is an automaton, a gifted chess player of course, but provided with intelligence. Even a soul? In any case of a consciousness of itself. Still, he wants to meet his father, his creator, because he wants to know more about our origins automaton with a conscience. And the way he will continue to recognize, as well as the importance in business, while continuing to question himself while observing the world.

Besides this automaton we follow Balthazar Hauser, a pure spirit. Finally pure, not because of materiality, but conscious level, it is more of a vengeful killer than anything else running his desire of poetic justice here and there to kill his brother Kaspar Hauser, the orphan Europe (an article about it on Wikipedia ).

We will follow these two entities, one mechanical, the other ethereal, until their final encounter. Along the way there would be questions that remain unanswered, which is not so bad, and we observe the world through two other ways to perceive things.

A short novel, then, is a stretched version of the story published in Bifrost. A very nice text, which tends to prove that Thomas Day is a good novelist. A book I recommend to all curious that the author is none other than the pseudonym of Gilles Dumay , the collection manager Moons Ink Denoƫl editions.
